If you haven’t been keeping up with me on Instagram, you wouldn’t know that I recently re-launched my YouTube channel. (I first started making YouTube videos in middle school but stopped after I was bullied online and in-person. If you want to know that story, click here.)
One of the first videos I decided to make was about how I became a social media manager at the age of 18. I’ve gotten so many questions from readers about how I got started freelancing, how I find jobs, and get clients. (Interested in social media management? See what a typical day in the life is like here.) The video I made addresses a ton of those questions and tells my personal story.

My tips for getting started as a social media manager:
- Get an internship in the Public Relations/Advertising/Social Media space if you can. It’s always best to learn from someone who already knows what they are doing!
- Start to build your profile and resume at any chance possible. This can be as simple as helping a co-worker/family member/friend with their social media profile or business page. Any experience counts!
- Know your worth and what you should charge. Freelancing is usually paid by the hour or at a fixed, one-time price. Market yourself as a beginner when just starting out, and find out what other beginners in your industry are charging.
- Get your name out there! Update your LinkedIn and let others know that you are looking for social media management clients. (Utilize Facebook groups, too! These are a gold-mine for finding entrepreneurs in need of social media help.)
- Update your resume with each client you successfully work with. Additionally, ask clients for a short testimonial that you can use on your website/etc.
