This isn’t one of those spammy articles you see on Google about how you can make $15,000/week. This isn’t a “get rich quick” scheme. This is the true story of how I quit my job and became my own boss. And how you can do it too.
If you are already a freelancer, read this post to find out how I raised my rates and got more money + clients here.
Two years ago, I was working as an after-school babysitter for minimum wage. Now, I work from home as a social media manager, managing different brand and blog Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram pages.
How did I do it?
How to Quit Your Job + Become Your Own Boss
I did it by trusting my intuition, knowing I deserved better, and oh…a little thing called freelancing.
After deciding that I didn’t want to be a babysitter for the rest of my life, I took to the worldwide Internet to look for ideas. I spent the better part of the summer after my senior year of high school searching for answers to my “what’s my next job?” situation.
Just when I was about to give up, I discovered that people were becoming creative entrepreneurs, and getting to work for themselves while doing what they loved. Seriously, it’s not a hoax.
I did a lot of soul-searching and tried to pin point what my possible service could be as a freelancer if I were to really go through with it. It was my impression that you had to be a super-genius to work for yourself or invent some world changing cure to disease to be able to work at home…or in your laboratory all day.
But that’s not the case. Everyone can freelance. Everyone has a passion that they get excited talking about, or do in their free time. That passion or hobby can become your saving grace and the good/service you offer to the world as a freelancer.
You’re probably thinking…okay, that sounds great. But what about the whole quitting your job story? Being your own promise you made at the beginning of this post?
Well. After all of this self-discovery, I realized that freelancing was a possibility for me. It seemed to excite me, something I hadn’t felt towards work in a long time. So…
I closed down my Care.com account and told friends/family that I wasn’t looking for new babysitting gigs anymore. Sure, I may not have stormed out of some corporate office yelling curse words; but I still did close down and quit a certain phase of my life.
Since the summer I discovered freelancing, I haven’t looked back. I now work as a freelance social media manager when I am not working on this blog. Honestly, I love my job and look forward to the new challenges and clients I get to work with on a daily basis. I truly can’t relate to my peers when they moan and groan about long work hours, demanding bosses, or minimum wage anymore.
