Moving into your first off-campus apartment can be stressful and confusing, but there’s no need to fear. I lived in an apartment this year for the first time, so I now know what furniture you actually need, and what will go to waste.

This post will guide you to the 5 pieces of furniture you need for your first year living off-campus.

5 Pieces of Furniture You Need in Your Off-Campus Apartment’s Bedroom

1. Mattress + Mattress pad

Your bed and mattress are imperative to your apartment’s bedroom. The main things you will be doing in your room is studying and sleeping, so you will want to make sure that your bed is as comfortable as possible.

I ordered my mattress pad from Amazon, and it came packed tightly in a cardboard box that was easily delivered to my door with Prime.

Tip: make sure that you get the right size mattress/mattress pad for your bed! It’s an easy mistake to make.

2. Desk

Perhaps the second most important piece of furniture is your bedroom’s desk.

Make sure that you measure the room before you order a desk because some desks can be extremely over-sized in person.

3. Seating

In college, friends are constantly coming over to hang out at each other’s apartments. Unfortunately, there’s not always a lot of space, so having extra seating that you can pull out at any time is extremely helpful.

I loved having chairs in my room that I knew I could pull out at any time to accommodate my friends. And especially comfy ones!

Tip: Try to find chairs that you can fold up and pack into small spaces like a closet, or under your bed.

4. Bookcase

The main reason you’re at school is to learn, right?!

So, you’ll need a bookcase or bookshelf to hold all of your textbooks and study guides. Luckily, there are a lot of inexpensive options out there that are both cute and functional.

Tip: You can also decorate easily with bookcases by putting little trinkets and plants/succulents on the shelves.

5. Nightstand

Don’t forget the nightstand!

Every inch of space in your apartment counts. Nightstands help a lot with organizing clutter and night-time essentials like lip balm, hand lotion, etc.

Tip: It’s also helpful to have a nightlight that you can turn on in the middle of the night when you have to make a run to the bathroom.

If you’re worried about how you’re going to get all your furniture into your apartment, you may want to consider CORT Furniture Rental.

Ever dreamed of being a mermaid before? Well, if so, you’re about to be blown away. AquaMermaid offers a real-life mermaid experience, which I tried for myself, and it’s awesome. This post will be detailing my AquaMermaid Chicago experience and share some fun photos with you all!

*I was invited to attend an AquaMermaid Chicago class, however, all opinions are my own and honest.*

My AquaMermaid Chicago Experience

AquaMermaid Chicago ExperienceWhat is AquaMermaid?

AquaMermaid is an awesome mermaid school that lets you experience what it’s like to be a mermaid for a day (or hour!) Right now, AquaMermaid has locations all over the world, like Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Quebec, Kitchener, Phoenix, and Chicago. Of course, I attended mermaid school in Chicago. Mermaid classes can be used for fitness reasons (trust me, it’s hard to rely on only your fin and abs to swim around!), or just for fun!

Oh! And, mermaid classes are perfect for any and all ages. (There were toddlers swimming around when I got there, and also middle aged women!) Anyone can come to class and try being a mermaid.

How does it work?

Being a mermaid isn’t easy! When you attend class, you get to put on your own, colorful tail. The tails themselves are made of stretch fabric like spandex and worn up to the waist. Your feet go into a monofin and the stretch fabric perfectly fits over the top of the fin to give you your tail 😉

What goes on in class?

The mermaid class I attended was 1 hour long, with 5 people in the class + 1 instructor. I attended class with my older sister, Hannah, and we had an absolute blast. After getting our fins fitted to our feet and slipping on our tails, we:

  • learned how to swim with our tails (it’s a lot of work!)
  • practiced different mermaid swimming techniques (like swimming on our side + back)
  • took fun pictures in our tails
  • did group swims, where all 5 of us in the class swam together side-by-side (these were the hardest!)

Honestly, the hour went by so fast and my sister and I were cracking up laughing the whole time. Swimming in a fin isn’t the most natural feeling in the world, but it is SO MUCH FUN and absolutely hilarious to watch each other struggle.

AquaMermaid Chicago Experience

I had the best time with my sister at AquaMermaid and would highly recommend it!

Survey sites are an awesome resource to use for making extra income. While taking surveys won’t replace your full-time income, they do help with earning extra cash. Instead of surfing the web endlessly for hours, why not give your opinions to companies and earn money while doing it?

Surveys are easy to complete and can even be fun! If you complete all of the survey opportunities sent your way, you can make $100+ per month.

I’ve used lots of different survey sites, and today I am rounding up my 3 favorite sites to use. All of the sites below are completely FREE to sign up for, so I would recommend registering to all of them (more opportunities to earn cash!)

2. Opinion Outpost

If you haven’t heard about Opinion Outpost yet, you’re missing out. Opinion Outpost is probably one of my favorite survey websites ever because of how easy it is to use, and how many opportunities you get to take surveys.

I like Opinion Outpost because they email you whenever a new survey is ready for you, which eliminates the waiting game. For every survey you complete, you earn points. 100 points = $10, and each survey is usually worth 5-20 points. It’s easy to accumulate points with Opinion Outpost (yay!) Opinion Outpost can also pay you via PayPal, or your points can be turned into gift cards.

3. Swagbucks

I LOVE SWAGBUCKS. There, I said it.

If you are looking to make some extra cash without much effort, Swagbucks is the site for you. And guess what? You get $5 just for signing up here!

While there are lots of different ways to earn with Swagbucks, one of my favorites is with surveys. Swagbucks has lots of different surveys that you can take on their website, and then redeem your bucks for rewards like Amazon gift cards, PayPal cash, Walmart gift cards, and more. They even have certain rewards that go on sale, meaning you can get more cash for fewer Swagbucks than normal.

Tips for Taking Online Surveys:

  • Always be honest when you are answering your surveys. It will only hurt you to be inconsistent in your answers since brands are looking for a specific type of person for some surveys. If you answer what your age is differently every time, you probably won’t get recruited for any new surveys.
  • Sign up for as many different survey websites as possible. There can be dry spells in the online survey world where you may not get a new survey opportunity for awhile. To avoid this, make sure you are registered with multiple websites.
  • Tell your friends + family about your favorite surveys sites! A lot of times, you can earn extra points/cash just for referring people under your name.

Do you use survey websites? What do you think are the best online survey sites? There are lots of websites out there, so I would love to hear about your favorites in the comments.

My Bedroom Refresh with Pier 1 Imports

My Bedroom + Style

Before we dive into the decor, let me paint a picture for you of my bedroom. One thing to keep in mind is that it is not big. In any sense of the word. Granted, I am a college student living in Chicago, so space is limited.

However small my room may be, I like to maximize my space and make it feel as inviting as possible. Since I work primarily from home, my bedroom is both my office + cozy space. Working + living in a comfortable space is very important to me!

I wanted to add some flair to my room for spring and add some more texture/variety to my bedroom. As I previously mentioned, I tend to be minimalistic in design, so I stuck to neutral colors for the majority of my decor. I like pops of color to come from greenery/plants in my decor.

The Decor

My bed is my sanctuary, so making it as fluffy + cozy as possible is essential to me. I like to keep my room as light and airy as possible and maximize the small amount of space that I do have. I found some awesome throw pillows from Pier 1 that I used to add texture and spunk to my otherwise minimal bed. And, because I couldn’t resist, I got 2 new white, fluffy down pillows for my bed. They are SO comfortable and make it feel like I’m sleeping on a cloud.

With limited space comes one big problem: where the HECK will all of my stuff go?! Living in the city has taught me that space is precious, and every square foot should be multi-purposed. I have been storing all of my shoes underneath my bed for months, but always hated how messy it looked.

Pier 1 solved this problem for me with their bed skirts, which conveniently conceals all of my shoes. And trust me…I have a lot of shoes.

Perhaps my favorite part of my new room decor are the fairy glimmer lights that hang behind my bed. I don’t have much room for a headboard, but the lights act as a makeshift headboard and frame my bed nicely. Plus, they come with a remote control to turn them on/off, so I never have to even leave the bed to turn them off when I’m falling asleep at night.

I live in a house with 4 other girls, so I constantly have one (or all) of my roommates in my room hanging out. Although I don’t have a lot of physical space, I like to make sure that I have comfortable spaces for people visiting me to sit/hang out.

My brand new rug makes my room feel that more inviting and is a lot more interesting than my plain brown carpeting. Pier 1 also has an awesome pillow selection that I used to my advantage to make more seating on the ground for my guests. The gray pillows you see (above) are also great because they can be used as decor both inside and outside since they are weatherproof.

So…I can’t keep a plant alive to save my life, but luckily Pier 1 has got me covered with their faux plants. My pick was this agave plant because it looks *so* real, (I’ve fooled 2 of my roommates already), and the marble pot it comes in really adds something unique to an otherwise boring corner of my room. I also like the way that the marble pot looks against the exposed white brick here.
